Steven A. Pederson returned to the University of Louisiana at Monroe School of Music and Band Program in the fall of 2016, where he currently serves as Associate Professor of Music and Conducting. He directs The Sound of Today Marching Band, conducts numerous concert groups, and teaches conducting, band literature, and instrumental music education classes. He also serves as Chair of the VAPA Recruitment and Retention Committee, and he is the faculty sponsor for the Epsilon Theta chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi.
For five years he served as Director of Bands and Tenured Associate Professor of Music at Kentucky Wesleyan College, where he coordinated and directed the instrumental program. The instrumental program grew steadily under his direction, and the number of students involved with the ensembles doubled each year. He conducted the wind ensemble, chamber orchestra, and taught clarinet, conducting, instrumental education, and music history classes. He also served as the coordinator of recruiting and scholarships for the music department, and as vice chair of the full college faculty. He was selected as the 2015 recipient of the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) College/University Teacher of the Year Award, and was also selected for the outstanding fine arts/communication faculty award at KWC.
Previously he taught at Centre College for eight years where he served as conductor of the orchestra, and was also on the conducting staff for the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras. Both groups experienced unprecedented growth under his direction. While at Centre College, his History of Rock & Roll class was featured in the national AAC&U Liberal Education magazine . He also served as Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at Alderson Broaddus College, where he conducted the wind ensemble and taught conducting, woodwinds, & music education classes. In addition, he directed the annual AB Band Invitational & Honor Band Festival. He was also a frequent guest conductor for numerous orchestras and bands throughout the mid central and south.
For ten years, he was Director of Bands and Tenured Associate Professor of Conducting at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. He directed and coordinated the entire wind program, and conducted the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and University Band. He also directed the 220-piece Marching Band, which performed regularly at SEC stadiums throughout the mid-south and south. Under his leadership, the band program tripled in size and the number of all state performers increased dramatically. During his tenure at ULM, the bands recorded fifteen CDs of both traditional and contemporary works for the wind band and the marching band. Mr. Pederson was also the faculty sponsor for the Epsilon Theta chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and the Delta Sigma chapter of Tau Beta Sigma. At ULM, he was selected by the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society as an outstanding faculty member for the College of Liberal Arts, and was also chosen as a Mortar Board Faculty Mentor.
He also has served as Associate Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the University of Central Arkansas, where he received a University Teaching Excellence Award, and the Phi Mu Alpha Faculty Award. In addition, he has directed highly successful and award winning high school bands in Missouri and Kansas.
He has completed his undergraduate and graduate work from Wartburg College (Magna Cum Laude), the University of Iowa, and the University of Kansas in music education, clarinet performance, and instrumental conducting, respectively. He has served as a guest conductor, clinician, consultant, and adjudicator for wind bands and orchestras throughout the United States. He has recently completed texts on Marching Band Techniques and Concert Band Techniques. In addition, he has performed as clarinetist with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Monroe Symphony Orchestra, Lawrence Orchestra, and the Kansas City Repertoire Orchestra. He has also served as conductor and clarinetist with the Arkansas Contemporary Ensemble and the Kansas New Music Ensemble. Mr. Pederson is an active member of CBDNA, KMEA, Phi Beta Mu, and is past state chairman of NBA.
